Requirements for manuscripts

Dear authors!

The Editorial Board recommends publishing articles in English, which will bring the magazine to an international readership. Strict adherence to the rules of manuscript design is also required, in case of non-compliance with which the article is returned to the authors without consideration. Carefully study the rules of publication before submitting the manuscript to the editors.

The author is not charged for the publication and editorial processing of the manuscript.

These rules are based on the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals, developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, and taking into account the requirements of the Order № 1112 (“On publication of the results of dissertations for the degree of doctor and candidate of sciences”) and requirements for publications included in the “List of scientific professional publications of Ukraine”, according to Order № 1111 of 17.10.2012. Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

All materials must be designed in accordance with the following requirements.

1. Manuscript

1.1. Text format. The manuscript is sent to the editorial office in electronic form in MS Word format (extensions .doc, .docx, .rtf), Times New Roman typeface; skittle 12; interval 1.5; margins 2.5 cm on both sides of the text. Highlighting in the text can be done only in italics or bold letters, but NOT underlining. All duplicate spaces and extra line breaks must be removed from the text (automatically via the Microsoft Word Find and Replace service).

1.2. The volume of the text of the manuscript, including the list of references, tables, illustrations, captions to them, should be for original articles 10-12 A4 pages (up to 5000 words), for literature review – 15-18 pages, for reports on observations from practice – 4 –6 pages, reviews – 4 pages.

1.3. Language of publication. Manuscripts from any country in Ukrainian or English are accepted for publication in the journal. Metadata of the article is published in three languages (Ukrainian, English). If desired, the authors can provide the full text of the article in both Ukrainian and English. Accompanying the translation with the conclusion of any official translation bureau on the correspondence of English and Ukrainian and Russian texts is mandatory. Poor translations of the full text of the article are not edited or published. The editorial board of the journal is not responsible for the quality of the translation, but monitors the preservation of the reliability of the information provided by the authors in the original language. Articles by foreign authors submitted in English are published without translation into Ukrainian (except for metadata) or with full or partial translation (titles and captions to figures, tables) at the discretion of the editors. When typing in Latin, it is important to use only the English keyboard layout. For example, it is unacceptable to replace the Latin letter with the Ukrainian letter and, despite the visual identity.

1.4. Submission of the manuscript. Submission of the manuscript. The article is sent to the e-mail address of the editorial office gastrosbornik@gmail.com (in the subject of the letter it is necessary to indicate the title

edition) in the form of a single file containing all the necessary elements (title page, summary, keywords, text, tables, list of references, information about the authors). Accompanying documents and copies of illustrations (drawings, diagrams, charts) in the formats of the program in which they were created are sent separately. If the illustrations in the article are presented in the form of photographs or bitmaps, you must submit a copy in * jpg or * tif format, the original size, with a resolution of 300 dots per inch. The physical size in centimeters should be sufficient for unambiguous perception and easy reading of the content of the illustration. RGB or CMYK color palette, no compression. Illustrations should be contrasting and clear.

Supporting documentation. The original article is accompanied by: a cover letter from the management of the institution where the study was conducted, the conclusion of the expert commission (the expert act must include the phrase: “Authors do not object to posting materials on the Internet”, a declaration of conflict of interest compliance with ethical standards in the study (see gastro.org.ua). These documents in electronic (scanned) form are sent to the e-mail address of the editorial office together with the article submitted for publication.

2. Structural elements of the manuscript

Mandatory structural elements of the article include:

  • title page;
  • resume;
  • Keywords;
  • the text of the article (including tables, figures);
  • Additional Information;
  • list of cited literature.

2.1. The title page must contain the following information in Ukrainian, Russian and English:

  • UDC articles.
  • The title of the article, which should fully reflect the subject and topic of the article, should not be too short, but should not contain more than 100 characters. The name is written in lower case, except for the capital letter of the first word and proper names.
  • Full name of all authors in full. When translating authors’ surnames into English, it is recommended to transliterate in the same way as in previous publications, or to use http://translit.net/, standardLC, for transliteration.
  • Full name of the institution where each author works. If there are several authors, each surname and the relevant institution is numbered. If all the authors of the article work in one institution, it is not necessary to indicate the place of work of each author separately, it is enough to indicate the institution once. If the author has several jobs, each is indicated by a separate numerical index.
  • the ORCID of each author.
  • Contact information of the responsible author: full name, title, place of work, position, postal address of the institution, e-mail address and contact phone number of the author.

2.2. Abstract (Abstract) is drawn up in three languages (Ukrainian, Russian, English). The author’s summary of the article is the main source of information in domestic and foreign information systems and databases that index the journal. Abstract should be

written in high-quality literate English, do not make a literal translation of the Russian version of the resume! The main part of the resume should be about 250 words or 2000 characters. The summary should contain only the essential facts of the work, a comprehensive description of the content of the article; it should not contain general words, exaggerate or include material that is missing in the text of the article. The summary of the original article should be structured and include 5 required headings in Russian (Ukrainian): “Relevance”, “Purpose of the study”, “Materials and methods”, “Results”, “Conclusions” – and 4 headings in English: Background (includes relevance and purpose of the study), Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusions. The volume of the “Results” section must be at least 50% of the total volume of the resume. Summaries of reviews, lectures, discussion articles are compiled in any form. Summaries of review articles should contain information on methods of searching the literature on databases Scopus, Web of Science, MedLine, The Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Global Health, CyberLeninka, RINC, etc.

The text should be coherent, using the words “respectively”, “moreover”, “for example”, “as a result”, etc. (consequently, moreover, for example, the benefits of this study, as a result, etc. ), or the separate stated provisions should logically follow from each other. The English text should use the active rather than the passive state: The study tested, not It was tested in this study. The summary should not contain abbreviations, except for common ones (eg DNA), footnotes and references.

2.3. Keywords. You need to specify 3-6 words or phrases that correspond to the content of the work and help index the article in search engines. The keyword “review” should be included in the keywords of review articles. Keywords should be identical in Ukrainian, Russian and English resumes; they should be written through a semicolon.

2.4. Article text. The structure of the full text of the manuscript, devoted to the description of the results of original research, should correspond to the generally accepted template and contain mandatory sections:

  • Introduction.
  • Goal.
  • Materials and methods.
  • Results.
  • Discussion.
  • Conclusions.

Introduction. It highlights the state of the problem under consideration at the global level (not only within a given city or country), provides a brief overview of relevant data, critical evaluation of the literature relevant to the problem, justification of novelty and significance of the study, identifies unresolved questions and clear goals and objectives are set, which explain further research. Each of these keywords should be reflected in the introduction. It is recommended to avoid long analyzes and historical excursions. The introduction should contain at least 15 references to articles in periodicals published over the past 5-10 years.

The purpose of the study is formulated in a separate paragraph, corresponds to the title of the article and the content of the section “Results”.

Materials and methods. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of patients or other objects of research, criteria of their inclusion and exclusion, description of research method (cohort, prospective, randomized drug trial, retrospective, series of observations), detailed description of new drug, method, modification, experiment, surgical intervention in a certain sequence. A brief description of the protocol (Standard Operating Protocol, SOP) is given. The section allows us to see that the study excluded all possible sources of error, that the author knows about all the factors that affect the results, and eliminated as much as possible the influence of these factors. At the end of the section, be sure to describe the methods of statistical data processing, indicating the company and country of manufacture of the programs used. It is necessary to indicate the nature of the sample distribution, parametric and / or non-parametric criteria used in the study. The section also provides information on the approval of the study by the local or central ethics committee, indicating the availability of written informed consent from patients to participate in the study. This section should be larger than the Results section.

The results should be clear and concise. The section includes a description and explanation of all data obtained with the results of their statistical processing, the level of evidence (I or II). The results should be presented in a logical sequence in the text, tables and figures. The text should not repeat all the data from the tables and figures, mention only the most important of them. The figures in the tables should not be duplicated in the figures. Measurement values must be in accordance with the International System of Units (SI), except for indicators traditionally measured in other units. The names of medicines must correspond to the international nomenclature of drugs. All letter designations and abbreviations must be explained in the text when first used. У цьому розділі відсутні посилання на літературу, немає інтерпретації даних і порівнянь з аналогічними результатами.

The discussion contains references to similar works (10-15 articles in international journals of the Scopus database for the last 5 years); new and important aspects of research results are highlighted and compared with already known data of other researchers. The information already provided in the Introduction section and the details in the Results section should not be repeated. The discussion can include sound recommendations for the implementation of the results or the need for further research on this topic.

The conclusions correspond to the purpose and title of the article. Conclusions should not be verbatim duplicated in the relevant part of the summary. Розділ повинен коротко описувати основні підсумки роботи.

Rubrication of reviews, lectures, discussion articles, observations from practice, methodological reports can be arbitrary. However, it is desirable that the comparison of reviews comply with international guidelines for systematic literature search methods and standards. Detailed information on comparing reviews can be found in the PRISMA guidelines. Recommended reporting elements for systematic review and meta-analysis are available at http://prisma-statement.org in the Key Documents section. Clinical observations designed in accordance with CARE recommendations are a priority. CARE recommendations can be found at http://care-statement.org

Tables are a self-sufficient element of the article and allow you to briefly and accurately present important information, thereby reducing the volume of the main text of the manuscript. Tables should contain only the necessary data and be generalized and statistically processed materials. Tables are placed in the text according to their first mention. Each table must have a title and serial number according to the first mention of it in the text. Do not use horizontal or vertical lines in middle tables. Each column in the table must have a short name. Each column in the table must have a short name.

«Матеріали і методи», у тому числі статистичні методи, використані для наведення варіабельності даних і вірогідності різниці. The abbreviations used in the table should be deciphered at the end of the legend in alphabetical order. References to tables in the text of the manuscript are made as follows: table. 1 (2, 3, etc.).

Illustrations (drawings, photographs, diagrams)

Each illustration should be a self-contained element of the article, have a common title and transcript of all abbreviations, so that the reader does not have to refer to the section “Materials and methods” or read the title of the article to understand it. In the text of the article, the illustrations are placed according to their first mention. References to the figure in the text of the manuscript are made as follows: fig. 1 (2, 3, etc.). The caption to each figure consists of its name and legend (explanation of parts of the figure, symbols: arrows and other details). An explanation of the content of the figure should be given in the legend, not in the figure itself. At the end of each legend it is necessary to indicate (in alphabetical order) and decipher all the abbreviations present in the figure, indicating the statistical criteria (methods) and parameters of statistical variability (standard deviation, standard error of the mean, etc.). It is recommended to indicate the statistical probability / probability of the difference of the data given in the tables with superscript symbols *, **, †, ††, ‡, ‡‡, etc.

The letters, numbers, and symbols in the pictures must contrast with the background, be clear, uniform, and large enough to remain legible after the picture is published. Identical illustrations must be the same size, scale, nature of information.

Diagrams must be drawn up correctly (signed names of axes, units of measurement in the SI system). Columns of charts that are probably different from each other are marked with *, **, ***. The subheading indicates n =… and the data comparison method. It is explained what “±” means near each data point (m, SD, SE, first and third quartiles, maximum and minimum data, etc.).

The captions to the graphs indicate the explanations for the abscissa and ordinate axes and units of measurement, explanations are given for each curve. Captions to microphotographs indicate the method of color and scale (degree of magnification).

Photographs of potentially identifiable people (patients whose face is not covered by a mask) must be accompanied by a written permission to publish. If the drawing (table, photograph) has been previously published somewhere, the original source must be indicated and written permission must be obtained from the copyright owner for the reproduction of the drawing, except for publicly available documents.

2.5. Additional information is indicated after the text of the article, before the bibliography (in Ukrainian and English). The presence or absence of a conflict of interest of the authors must be declared (in such cases, the phrase “Authors declare the absence of a conflict of interest” is given). The presence or absence of a conflict of interest of the authors must be declared (in such cases, the phrase “Authors declare the absence of a conflict of interest” is given).

Funding information. The source of funding must be indicated – all persons and organizations that provided financial support to the research (in the form of grants, donations or donations of equipment, reagents, consumables, medicines, etc.), as well as those who participated in other financial or personal activities. conflict of interest. You do not need to specify the amount of funding.

Thanks. The authors are grateful to the people and organizations who contributed to the publication of the article, but were not its authors.

The authors thank (surname, etc.) for the design of illustrations.

2.6. When References (References)

Proper design of the bibliography is a very important aspect in the preparation of the manuscript, which should be approached thoroughly.

Requirements for the preparation of the list of literature in accordance with the Order of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine and in accordance with international standards differ, and therefore it must be provided in 2 versions.

The list of literature in accordance with the requirements of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine is drawn up in accordance with DSTU GOST 7.1: 2006 “System of standards for information, library and publishing. Bibliographic record. Bibliographic description. General requirements and rules of compilation “.

Use examples when compiling a list.

References should be in Latin characters according to the standards of the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

General recommendations

Each source should be placed on a new line under the serial number indicated in the text in Arabic numerals in square brackets. In the list all works are placed in the order of citation, NOT in alphabetical order. The optimal number of cited works in original articles and lectures is 20-30, in reviews – 40-60. It is desirable to cite original works published in the last 5-7 years in foreign periodicals, highly cited sources, including Scopus and Web of Science. Try to minimize or avoid self-citation. Also try to minimize references to abstracts of conferences, monographs. The list of literature does not include unpublished works, official documents, manuscripts of dissertations, textbooks and reference books.

Additional information about articles – DOI, PubMed ID, etc. should be provided. If less than half of the sources on the list have DOIs, the article cannot be published in an international scientific journal. Links should be verifiable. Before completing the bibliography, check each source at http://www.crossref.org/guestquery or https://scholar.google.com/

ALL AUTHORS must be listed in the bibliographic description of each source. Only in the case of 7 or more authors is the instruction “etc. (et al.) ”after the first three surnames. If the authors are 6 or less, “etc. (et al.) ”is not used. It is not allowed to shorten the title of the article. The title of English-language journals can be abbreviated. Usually this form of writing is accepted by the publication itself, you can find it on the website of the magazine, publisher, in the Journal List, on the ISSN website, or you must specify its full name without abbreviations. The names of domestic magazines cannot be shortened.
